Sightseeing in Salzburgerland

 Salzburgerland offers the summer Visitor a huge variety of sightseeing opportunities, from beautiful lakeside villages, to fairytale castles and of course the historic city of Salzburg. Many of the attractions are included on the Salzburgerland Card  visitor pass, which for a one-off fee gives free entry to a wide variety of attractions along with access to many of the cable cars that operate during the summer.  Click here for a map of Salzburgerland.

Here are some suggestions of places to visit:


City of Salzburg

The city of Salzburg has something to offer everyone. The charming old town features classical baroque architecture, whilst the city is overlooked by the great Hohensalzburg castle, the largest and best preserved medieval castle in Europe. As the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg is also famous for its musical heritage, and was famously the backdrop for many scenes from the musical The Sound of Music.

Castle Hohenwerfen

Used in the film Where Eagles Dare, Hohenwerfen castle perches on a dramatic hilltop offering amazing views of the surrounding mountains. A funicular railway operates up to the castle itself, where you can tour the internal rooms, and falconry displays are operated most days through the summer.

  

Werfen Ice Caves

The Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves near Werfen are the largest naturally occurring ice caves in the World. Reached by a combination of cable car and uphill hike, guided tours take you inside the caves lit only by burning ribbons to protect the fragile environment that created this natural wonder.



Lichtensteinklamm

A raised walkway follows the Lichtensteinklamm gorge as it cascades down from the mountains toward the town of Sankt Johann.

 

Hallstatt


The Salt Mining village of Hallstatt is a beautifully preserved village that was only accessible by boat until just a few decades ago. Nestling beside Hallstattersee Lake, it is one of the most famous images of the Salzburgerland Salzkammergut Lake District.

 

 

St Wolfgang

St Wolfgang is a charming lakeside village with great cafes and restaurants, and the opportunity for a boat trip across the spectacular Wolfgangsee Lake.

 

Grossglockner



Take a drive over the highest mountain pass in the Austrian Alps. A unique experience.

 


  

Hitler’s Eagles Nest

Just 20km from Salzburg over the border with Germany, is the town of Berchtesgarten, above which perches the Eagles Nest, the retreat used by Adolph Hitler and featured in so many of his home movies.

 

 

Dachstein Glacier



At 3000m the Dachstein Glacier is the highest accessible peak in Salzburgerland. Take the cable car to the summit for spectacular views and the amazing Skywalk.

Schloss Hellbrunn

Built by Cardinal, Schloss Hellbrunn lies on the outskirts of Salzburg. Along with the elegant main house, the gardens features a unique water garden, along with the adjoining Hellbrun Zoo

 

 

Venice (Italy)

Head south through the Tauern alpine tunnel, and in just over 3 hours you can be in the magical city of Venice.   certainly one of the 'must see' destinations in the world.
